The United States survived a five-set battle against Serbia in the quarterfinals while Russia defeated Bulgaria 3-1.
Whether the US is on its way back to recapturing the glory days of the 1980s remains to be seen, but last year they finished third in the World League and fourth at the World Cup.

Athens’ bronze medalists Russia are determined to go further with the help of hitters Maxim Mikhaylov and Sergey Tetyukhin.

Zou Shiming had an easy win over Kazakhstan's Birzhan Zhakypov in the quarterfinal and will fight against Ireland's Paddy Barnes today for a shot at a gold medal.

Zou won the World Championship in 2005 and 2007 while Barnes finished fifth last year.

Basketball/ Men/ Semifinal: Spain vs Lithuania

Spain eased past Croatia 72-59 to reach the semifinals while Lithuania trounced China 94-68 to advance to their fifth consecutive Olympic semifinals.

Lithuania will face Spain’s Pau Gasol, who is averaging 19.5 points per game during the tournament. Guarding Gasol will be the key to the game.

Hockey/ Women/ Final: China vs Netherland

This is a rematch of a tightly-contested group stage game won 1-0 by the Netherlands.

China overcame defending champions Germany 3-2 to make it to the final in women's hockey at the Olympics for the first time. The victory was especially sweet as China lost to Germany in the semifinals at Athens.

The Netherlands, led by Maartje Paumen, crushed Argentina 5-2. Paumen’s hat-trick gives her 11 goals in the tournament.
